Yay: #DavisCA police come through quickly on issue of dangerous signs

So , Saturday I got really annoyed with some unsafe street signs in Davis. I wrote some emails to the police and some realtors. I took pictures. I posted a blog post. And so on (see blog here - Davis, CA: Getting more and more annoyed with dangerous Real Estate signs in #DavisCA). Basically, the issues were realtors putting their open house signs in the street and some others putting signs in areas to block the view of oncoming traffic.

And though I got a response from one of the realtors, it was not very convincing. Thus I was more than pleased this AM to get an email back from the Davis Police Department in response to the emails I had sent in to policeweb@cityofdavis.org

And they said two things. First, they had talked to the manager of the apartment complex that had been placing a sign obstructing traffic and the manager was taking it down. And the police were going to send an email to all realtors in the area reminding them that placing their signs in the street or other public right of way was illegal. May seem like a small thing to many, but I have seen a few near crashes due to the realtor signs and worried about crashes due to the apartment sign. And thus to have these issues fixed so quickly made my day.

I must say, I have had nothing but good interactions with the Davis Police when I have sent questions or emails to their non emergency email address.

Burrowing Owls on Wildhorse Ag Buffer Trail

In addition to the crawdads, the burrowing owls have been out in full force on the Wildhorse Ag buffer trail recently. There are at least 20 if not more living in the tunnels along the trail. Always entertaining.

Here are some pictures from another night of crawdad fishing. We have been going for some walks along the Wildhorse Ag. Buffer trail at night and keep coming upon a few families fishing for crawdads in the creek. This night, they also had one of their cats with them. It was quite entertaining, with the kids lowering McNuggets into the creek and reeling up crawdads in seconds. Then they dumped out the bucket and watched them crawl back to the creek.

I am getting more and more annoyed with the Davis Realtor crowd. They seem to think that they can place signs anywhere they want to promote their sales. Here are some examples I took today, including one sign by Mona DeMasi that forced a couple of kids further into the path of a car while the kids were trying to ride around a circle.

Crawdads from Wildhorse Creek, Davis, CA

Just a quick one here. Went for a walk last night on the Wildhorse Agricultural Buffer trail near Wildhorse and bumped into a few families "fishing" for crawdads on the bridge over the little creek there. They were catching them just for the kids to look at them and then let them go on the bridge, which entertained my kids quite a bit ... here is a slide show of the crawdads:

Here is a little video I made when I went to pick up Rebecca Skloot for her talk at UC Davis last week. She was staying at the new UC Davis hotel University of California Davis Hotel | Hyatt Place which is on campus right near the Mondavi Center. The hotel seemed very very nice.

Just thought I would post the vid -- seems like it is a good addition to the area hotels with the one exception that it is not in downtown.

Cash-strapped Explorit appeals to community for support

For 28 years, Explorit Science Center has been a gem of the Davis community and an educational boon to the Sacramento region, providing hands-on science opportunities for thousands of families and schools.

Now, the center is confronting a challenge that science can't address. Financial struggles are threatening the existence of Explorit's main site at 2801 Second St., which was purchased in 2006.
In response, the center is appealing to the community for support.

"We know this is a philanthropic community, and one that strongly believes in furthering the education of our children," says Lou Ziskind, executive director. "We need help to keep the Explorit mission alive."

Ziskind attributed the financial difficulties to the down-turned economy and unfortunate timing in the center's purchase of the Second Street site.

"Government funding for education is down, corporate donations and grants are scarce, and understandably, individuals just cannot contribute like they could a couple years back," he said. "Income from program fees, also a key revenue source, have shrunk as well."

"The bigger concern, however, is that in 2006, when the economy seemed sound and real estate values were rising, we obtained bridge financing to complete the purchase of our building," Ziskind said. "With a drop-off in income, we are struggling with the repayment terms of our $1.6 million loan. Without additional financial support, our ability to run our Second Street facility will be in jeopardy."

Ironically, the museum is thriving in many ways. It is breaking attendance records -- 2,391 visitors in November was a 40 percent increase over November 2008 -- and visitor evaluations have been very positive.

"We've finished our phased-in opening of the museum so there is more fun stuff to do than ever," Ziskind said. "We've also been getting great media attention with new attractions like our streambed table and new promotions like "Toddler Tuesday."

Explorit's Board of Directors and staff believe that the need for the center's informal science education programs is greater than ever.

"In Davis, we're fortunate to have a school budget that allows for science education in elementary classrooms," said Betsy Elzufon, an Explorit trustee and mother of two. "Sadly, in many other towns, the students' only hands-on science experiences are those provided by Explorit's traveling programs. For those schools, it is truly a blessing to have us help fill the void and educate these students about the importance science lends to our daily lives."

To keep the Explorit vans rolling and the museum open, Explorit offers a package of ways to lend support, says Peter Willson, the development director. The organization is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization; donations are tax-deductible.

"We have a 'Donate' button on our website, of course," he said, referring towww.explorit.org. "That's the easiest and fastest. We also gladly take cash or check donations at the museum during visiting hours or through the mail (to Explorit at P.O. Box 1288, Davis CA 95617). Then our website has lots of other information about ways to help, including a new car-donation program."

He and board members are hopeful that the center will weather the recession.

"This place has been a great part of the community for over a quarter-century and has meant so much to the families in Davis and the greater Sacramento region," Elzufon said. "It would be a sad day if we were not able to continue offering our many valuable programs to the many families, schools, and educators who depend on us."

Well, however you feel about the Wildhorse Ranch vote in Davis, this whole election just seems absurd. A whole election just to vote on this one thing? And do they really need a multi-page color sample ballot? So if I could, I would vote to require these "special" elections about rezoning to only happen if there already was another important election going on. Even if the pro-Ranch crown pays for the election, it just seems like a waste ...

Just got this email (see below) from WalkScore that I thought might be of interest to Davisites. Walk Score is one of several types of "software for civic life" from Frontseat. This systems allows one to evaluate the walkability of a community or address. And now they are looking to release the software for WalkScore at Walkscore.Org as an open source development. And they are trying to get more people involved in this - including asking for what new developments they should make. I have suggested previously that they should incorporate bikability. For those of you who are obsessed with bicycling (like me), and live in bicycling heaven Davis, CA, and occasionally look at the New York Times, you may have noticed this already. But for others who have not I want to call your attention to a book review in the New York Times this past Sunday by David Byrne Book Review - 'Pedaling Revolution - How Cyclists Are Changing American Cities,' by Jeff Mapes - Review - NYTimes.com.

Amazingly this is indeed the same David Byrne of them Talking Heads. It turns out he has a book coming out in the fall called "Bicycle Diaries." Anyway he reviews this book on the effect of bicyclists on American Cities and right there in the review are some props for my town, Davis, CA. The article is worth checking out and I will both be buying this book and awaiting Byrne's. Maybe we can have a reading here in Davis when the Bicycling Hall of Fame opens its doors.

Yet Another Reason Davis Should Be Selected for the Bicycling Hall of Fame

Davis is just an incredible bike town. There is good reason it is one of two finalists for being the host city of the Bicycling Hall of Fame. And here is one example of why it should win --- the bike paths and bike lanes around town make this city great for commuting on ones bike. Here are some pictures I took yesterday of my favorite bike ride to work. It is a little bit out of the way but it is worth it. About 7 or so miles total each way and it only has ~ 4 road crossings and one short stretch of a few hundred yards on a bike lane - and the rest is on off road bike paths.

Darwin in Davis

Since this is kind of a Davis thing too I am cross posting it from my work blog.

Well, this has been a good week for me in Davis in terms of things in which I am interested. First, the Tour of California started in Davis and then tonight we had a Darwin celebration (with cake and talks) in a movie theater in downtown. The three talks were by Rick Grosberg, who gave a good background on Darwin the person, Mau Stanton who talked about Evolution and Society and me, who talked about Uses of Evolution. The shindig was sponsored by the Center for Population Biology and funded by the Storer Endowment. And it was organized by Angus Chandler and Dena Grossenbacher and possibly some others. And the theater was packed to the gills. Food. Folks. And Fun. And I owe some thanks to folks who responded to my FriendFeed posting asking about other examples of Uses of Evolution.
